Puppy Litters Planned in 2017 - 2018

Puppies may leave us for their new homes after 8-weeks-of-age, not before. We usually have a waiting list for puppies of all colors and genders.

Puppies are $2,500, from August 1, 2017.  Price includes an airline crate and shipping to other islands.  For residents of the Big Island, price is $2,300.

To reserve a puppy, you may send a deposit of $500 to Aloha Labradors at the address at the bottom of this page.  Deposits are fully refundable at any time for any reason.

Dates deposits are received establish the order in which people may select puppies.

Hawaii does not have enough responsible breeders of Labrador retrievers (and many other breeds).  I am happy to help any of my puppy buyers, who may want to breed, with several important conditions.

All puppies are put on the AKC Limited Register, which means your dog is fully registered, but no offspring of your dog can be registered with the AKC until I give you Full Registration.

Your dog may have Full Registration, once you meet the requirements for responsible breeding (see these requirements at the bottom of the Puppies page).

If you do not intend to breed, the kind of AKC registration has no effect on you or your dog.

Lily and Samson were bred on October 10,2016 for an all-yellow litter in December 2016.  Lily is a beautiful girl, a

great retriever, and an all-round lovely girl, but she did not come into season as expected.

Samson is a great guy, all-round dog.  This is Lily's first litter at 3 1/2 years of age.

Her puppies were born on December 17, 2016.  She had 8 beautiful puppies -- 5 girls and 3 boys.

Spiritrock Touch of Amber (Amber), sister to Ruby, will be bred to Amari Kula Palekana (Samson) when she comes into season in the spring of 2017.

Last year, Amber had  7 beautiful puppies on September 7 -- four yellow boys, one yellow girl, one black girl and one black boy.  Amber is an lovely, calm girl and a people dog.  Amber proved to be a very good mother.  All puppies were reserved and went to their new homes in November.

Here are some not-so-good pictures of the puppies at 6-weeks.  They were outside under a red tent, which makes all of their coats look more tawny than they are.  All of these puppies are quite light yellow, like the Abby-Samson puppies from 2016, shown below.

Their weights are shown for size comparisons.  Pink collar girl is the smallest; orange collar boy the largest.

Aloha Emily's Camille of Timberline Ben (Camille) Amari Kula Palekana (Samson, imp. Aust.)
Here are photos of the puppies at 7-weeks-of-age (9-04-17).  They look more tawny than the puppies are because we took the pictures early in the morning under an orange canopy.  Just bear in mind they are all lighter than they appear here.

Most of the puppies now have a spot or two.

A hook-worm larva bore into the skin, dragging staph bacteria with it.  In young puppies, this causes a large reaction by their immature immune systems. The spot will disappear, hair will regrow, and it will disappear in about a month.

We have had this problem repeatedly since 2012, when a (former) friend brought his puppies to my farm to show them to potential customers.  He failed to worm his puppies, so they shed hookworm eggs all over my house yard.  It is impossible to get rid of hookworm eggs in grass and soil.  Mothers drag them to puppies on their fur.

We worm our puppies religiously at 3, 5, and 7 weeks of age, so they do not have worms of any kind.

Ruby did not have puppies in 2017, and I hope to breed her in 2018.  She will be bred to Samson for black and yellow litter.

We breed females no more than once a year from age 2 years to 8 years.  Then they retire.

Abigail will retire after her 2017 litter.

Normally, our girls are bred once a year from age 2 to 7- or 8-years-of-age. We expect to repeat 2016 breedings in 2017, so that girls have one litter per year.  Breeding

does not always result in pregnancy, however.  Given the irregular nature of breeding cycles, girls more often have one litter per 15 to 18 months.   I try to keep this page

up-to-date on breedings and puppy arrivals.  You can follow our progress toward getting you a puppy on this page, and, of course, call me at any time.

Big puppies chase around in a big yard with a house and canopy for shade and rain protection.  Just one problem: Lab puppies LOVE water, including rain, so they are quite muddy when it rains.

Dirt all drops off when they dry.

About Breeding Your Puppy (April 1, 2016)

Sandra Scarr

Hawaii does not have enough responsible breeders of Labrador retrievers (and many other breeds).  I am happy to help any of my puppy buyers, who may want to breed, with several important conditions.

First, as of today, I am putting all puppies on the AKC Limited Register, which means your dog is fully registered, but no offspring of your dog can be registered with the AKC until I give you Full Registration.

Second, your dog may have Full Registration, once you meet the requirements for responsible breeding.

·         If you think you may want to breed, before you select a puppy, tell me!  I want to make sure you receive a puppy who does not carry an EIC (Exercise-Induced Collapse1) gene.

o   Sasha, Rose, and Samson carry one EIC gene, which does not affect them at all, but they pass it on to half of their offspring.

o   Our puppies are also unaffected, because we breed Carriers to Clears (the other 15 Labs), so puppies can have only one EIC gene at most.

o   Through genetic testing of the puppies, we can determine which puppies are Clear.

·         Females should not have puppies until they are fully mature, after 24 months of age.  Males can breed by the end of the first year, because their biological burden is small.

·         Both parents must have hips and elbows certified by the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) or by another recognized certification body.  Hip and elbow x-rays can be taken at most veterinary clinics and submitted to a certification body when the puppies are at least 12-months-of-age.

·         Both parents must have certified Clear Eyes.  The only veterinary ophthalmologist in the state is Dr. Maya Yamagata, whose main office is in Honolulu but who travels regularly to the Neighbor Islands to conduct eye certification.

·         If you plan to breed with another dog that was not bred at Aloha Labradors, you should require the same, important measures that are being required of your dog.

·         Do not inbreed.  Check pedigrees for relatedness.

·         Your responsibility is to breed sound, healthy puppies.  These criteria are the best you can do to assure successful outcomes for the puppies you create.

·         Your puppy is clear of all other common genetic disorders of the Labrador retriever breed, as listed on the Girls and Boys pages of the Aloha Labradors web site.  Your dogs are clear by parental descent.

·         Make sure the dog you breed to is also clear of major genetic disorders, through genetic testing of the dog’s parents or the dog himself.

Once you have met these criteria for responsible breeding, I will notify the AKC that your dog’s registration is to be changed from Restricted to Full, so that any puppies your dog may have can be also registered with the AKC.

I can also be consulted for helpful advice on puppy whelping and rearing, based on 15 years’ experience. Hawaii does not have enough responsible breeders of Labrador retrievers, and I am happy to help you become one.

1.       Exercise-Induced Collapse is a simple, recessive genetic disorder common in Labrador retrievers.  About half of Labs are Carriers, and 10% or so are Affected (have 2 copies of the EIC gene).  Under conditions of high excitement and strenuous activity, the rear ends of Affected dogs collapse.  They may be unconscious for several minutes before recovering.  Treatment is seldom required.
